What can EAP do for you
Positive Confrontation
Guidelines for Performance Discussions

MAKE YOUR REFERRALS PROGRESSIVE

bulletStart as early as possible. There need not be a performance problem to make a referral.
bulletRemember, the key is early intervention. The earlier an employee recognizes and deals with a personal problem, the easier it will be to resolve.

INFORMAL REFERRAL

bulletNot based on job performance
bulletStart here if you can
bulletWhen you become aware there are some outside problems
bulletSometimes the employee will come to you and share details
bulletPlease do not try to counsel the employee or pry about the situation.
bulletInform the employee of the EAP
bulletGive brochure or card and sell it.
bulletAssure confidentiality

FORMAL REFERRAL

bulletBased on documented performance decline
bulletEither the disciplinary procedure is in place,
bulletOr, the very next step is to start discipline
bulletConsult with your HR Department
bulletStrength of referral increases with progressive discipline
bulletMake the focus of your discussion on performance, not on the personal problems
